About this Winery:
This small wine estate has established itself as one of the great crus in this territory in the heart of Tuscany, delineated by the Orcia and Ombrone valleys. The estate, formerly owned by the Biondi-Santi family, was purchased by the late Sergio Rossi (formerly at Altesino-Caparzo), and is now run by vineyard manager/director Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore. They make five wines, all made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, the only grape planted on the property. Their first vintage was in 1976, making La Gerla one of the first 35 bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino; these days, there are 280. The winery name comes from the large, old-fashioned, conical baskets that grape-harvesters used to carry on their backs.

Tasting Notes:
  • Color: Intense ruby verging on garnet.
  • Favor: Fruity, dry, warm, velvety, harmonious, steady body and soul.
  • Perfume: Intense, ethereal melting into scentdìs of sweet violet and iris, recalling the berries growing in the woods
Food Pairing:
Red meats, preferably wild game; to serve, store sideways at room temperature at least 24 hours beforehand, cork two hours in advance, decant and serve in decanter.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Now we're talking. I tasted the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino after tasting the other samples from La Gerla, and it's amazing how clearly and convincingly that brawny Brunello character comes through. This is a robust and precise wine that shows dark berry fruit, red currant, spice, licorice and grilled herb. I love the way that all that beautiful Sangiovese intensity comes together with immediate focus and clarity. About 40,000 bottles were released. Nice job." - Monica Larner (Oct 2020)

94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Black cherry and black currant fruit is accented by tobacco, earth and mineral flavors in this sleek yet dense red. Balsamic elements of juniper, thyme and olive add depth as this cruises to a long finish. The potential lies in the excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2042. 3,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported." - BS (Jun 30, 2020)

94 Points - Vinous Media:
"La Gerla's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous, showing depths of earthy moist soil, minerals and hints of animal musk up front, giving way to crushed strawberry and cherry, getting spicy with lifting minerals yet retaining a rich character throughout. On the palate, silky textures are matched by cool-toned acids and refreshing moist mineral tones, as zesty cherry and cedar come forward. It's so balanced and smooth, with high energy lasting into the long finish, showing saturating spice and salty minerals, yet remaining cool-toned and precise. The 2015 is a beautifully balanced wine that’s firmly rooted in the earth. " - Eric Guido (Apr 2020)

93 Points - James Suckling:

"Lots of raspberry coulis, dried redcurrants and red-plum compote here. The medium-to full-bodied palate has fleshy and succulent appeal with juicy tannins and a fruit-forward finish. Drink now or hold." (16 Sep, 2019)

92 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Aromas of wild berry, violet, new leather and star anise fill the glass. Firm and boasting finesse, the linear palate features ripe Morello cherry, mature cranberry, licorice and dried Mediterranean spice set against taut polished tannins. It closes on a roasted coffee bean note. Drink 2022–2027." - Kerin O’Keefe (7/1/2020)
