Notes from the Winemaker:
Sourced from vineyards with pedigrees dating back to the 1800s, this wine continues to carry the torch of Howell Mountain’s greatness. The aromatics are lifted with plum, huckleberry and minerality leading the way. Bittersweet chocolate and dried herbs add the punctuation to an incredibly long balanced finish.

Varietal Composition: 90.5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 4.5% Tannat
Vineyards: La Jota, W.S. Keyes
Barrel Ageing: 22 months in 100% French oak, 74% new
Alcohol: 14.5%

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - James Suckling:
"A firm, silky red with blackberry, blueberry and hints of black and green olives and herbs. Medium-to full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins and a fruity finish. Drink or hold." (3/26/2021)

95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"In general, 2018 was a great vintage for this variety, and the deep purple-hued 2018 Merlot is stunning stuff. Lots of cassis, candied violets, scorched earth, and graphite notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, elegant 2018 with polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s going to evolve for 15 years or more." (1/27/2021)

95 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Refined, rich and powerfully structured flavors of cherry, currant and dried raspberry are tensile, supported by firm acidity and tannins. Ends with a minerally flourish on the firm finish, with notes of savory herbs. Best from 2022 through 2027. 970 cases made." - KM (Web Only - 2021)

94+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with earthy notes of truffles, tilled soil and mossy tree bark with a core of warm cassis, blackberry preserves and fresh plums..." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (1/14/2021)

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"Black cherry, graphite, dried herbs, lavender, spice and crushed rocks infuse the 2018 with tons of complexity. Far from an easygoing wine, the La Jota Merlot is a serious red that will benefit from cellaring." - Antonio Galloni (1/2021)
