The estate, formerly owned by the Biondi-Santi family, was purchased by the late Sergio Rossi (formerly at Altesino-Caparzo), and is now run by vineyard manager/director Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore. They make five wines, all made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, the only grape planted on the property. Their first vintage was in 1976, making La Gerla one of the first 35 bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino; these days, there are 280. The winery name comes from the large, old-fashioned, conical baskets that grape-harvesters used to carry on their backs.

About the Wine:
This wine is obtained from declassified Brunello, which nonetheless follows the strict production regulations, shows characteristics of freshness and typical aromas of quality young wines, fruity and vinous notes blend with more complex autumn leaves and violet.

Vineyards location: Hillside at 270-320 metres

Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello)

Training system: Spurred cordon

Vines average age: 20 years

Cultivation practices

Intense pruning, production limited to very few bunches per plant (50ql/ha), harvested by hand and selection of grapes on selection table

Vinification process

Soft pressing of grapes, temperature-controlled fermentation (30°C) and maceration (15 days), racking twice a year, slow continuous flow bottling in sterilized conditions

Alcohol content: 14%

Ageing: 1 year, 10 months in large oak barrels

Bottle ageing: 2 months before release

Tasting Notes:

Colour: Ruby red

Perfume: Prevalent fruity character, small ripe red fruits. From younger vines across the estate’s 12ha, this is aged in oak barrels of various capacities for up to a year. Good value and no hurry to drink.
