Notes from the Winemaker:
Louis Kapcsandy Sr. has led a remarkable life. Arriving in the U.S. as an Hungarian refuge in the 1960s, he is a self-made American success story, as well as a retired Professional NFL player. His chemical engineering background was the foundation upon which he built a very successful construction company, but also continues to play a significant role in his vast knowledge of soil analysis, vine health and vinification. In 2001, his lifelong passion for wine turned into reality with the purchase and replanting of the famed Berringer State Lane Vineyard in Yountville. Along with his wife and son, and consulting winemaker Denis Malbec (Chateau Latour) they are making modern Cabernets with an old world finesse, and leading the charge towards producing legendary wines with lower alcohols and a nod to the wines of decades past.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2012 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard, which is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot aged in a combination of mostly new French oak, but some Hungarian oak as well, represents 1,190 cases, or 50% of the production from their estate vineyard. This wine shows beautiful floral notes along with hints of earth, chocolate, espresso, licorice and blackcurrants. It is elegant, medium to full-bodied, with impressive purity, texture and length. The wine shows relatively sweet tannin, but then so do most of the top 2012s. It should drink nicely for 15-20 more years." - RP (Oct, 2015)

92-95 Points - Stephen Tanzer:
"(an 80/20 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot; aged in 100% new oak, 84% French and 16% Hungarian): Dark ruby-red. Crushed blackcurrant, mint, wild herbs and rose petal on the nose and in the mouth. Riper and deeper than the Endre but still with an exciting high pitch that serves to intensify the mid-palate. This wonderfully silky, tactile wine finishes with outstanding length." - ST (May 2014)

94+ Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media:
"A dark, powerful wine, the 2012 Estate Cuvée possesses gorgeous depth and textural richness. Open and large on the palate, the 2012 delivers plenty of pleasure today. Next to the best wines from the estate, the 2012 Estate Cuvée lacks a touch of freshness - especially in its aromatics - but it is incredibly appealing today. My sense is that the 2012 is going through a period of dullness, as the bouquet is not as expressive as it has been in the past. A closing note of rose petal and mint adds the final layer of nuance. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot."

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Pure and focused on a dense core of extracted currant, crushed rock, espresso, plum and wild berry. The tannins are firm and gripping but also ripe, giving this a long, tapered finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2018 through 2030. 800 cases made." - JL (Nov 15th, 2015)
