About the Wine:
Jayson Chardonnay is a marriage of three distinctive Napa Valley regions: bright, elegant Carneros hillside; and rich, ripe St. Helena valley floor; with intense mountain fruit at its core. Across our sites, we employ tunneling (pulling internal leaves) in our canopy managment to increase airflow without risking berry integrity. The finished wine has a fresh and bright palate with beautiful aromatics and just enough intensity and richness to impart an unmistakable gravitas. Aging in heavily toasted François Frères barrels allow pure fruit aromatics to be front and center with a subtle butterscotch and salted caramel underscore.

Our 2021 Jayson Chardonnay offers a captivating interplay of richness and finesse, with a soulful complexity revealing itself with each sip. The nose is greeted with aromas of orange blossom and honeysuckle, lemon oil, and crushed Marcona almond. Notes of preserved Meyer lemon introduce the bright, finely detailed palate, the integrated oak profile lending a complementing mid-palate richness. Interwoven notes of butterscotch, marzipan, and grilled pineapple slowly emerge and sustain through a long, layered finish.

Winemaking:

Alcohol: 14.9%
Harvested: August 31, 2021
Bottled: August 31, 2022
Released: May 8, 2023

The grapes were hand-picked from select vineyards in the Napa Valley. After coming into the cellar, the grapes were hand-sorted before gently whole-cluster pressed. After settling overnight, the wine was fermented for about 45 days and then aged entirely in French oak barrels, including 100% malolactic fermentation.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This classic, proven style of toasty but balanced Chardonnay will be perfect for a dinner party. It is dry, appetizing and just rich enough in texture to pair with grilled fish, roast chicken, even steak. Savoring on its own brings out a creamy, layered palate of poached pears and vanilla bean." - Jim Gordon (Dec 2023)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Sliced cooked apple with some apple puree and apple blossom as well as lemon rind on the nose. Medium-bodied with creamy texture. Flint and mineral flavors. Good acidity and energy. Hints of fresh straw underneath. Drink now." (Jun 2023)

92 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Rich and bold up front, offering plenty of honeysuckle and spice notes. A drizzle of wildflower honey and a toast detail complement flavors of apricot pastry, candied ginger and marmalade, while a fresh thread of acidity runs throughout, keeping the flavors juicy and in focus on the creamy frame. Drink now through 2033. 4,422 cases made." - MW (Jun 2024)

92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Fruit sources are from Carneros, St. Helena, and Napa Valley AVAs. The Jayson wines are soft and approachable at the pop of the cork and ready to drink. Native fermentation in 60% new French oak with some medium-plus toast and some second and third-use Pahlmeyer Chardonnay barrels. Aromatically, this is bright with yellow apples laced with vanilla, orange blossoms, and nuts. Medium-bodied with a hefty dose of creamy ripe fruit and a long finish." - Jonathan Cristaldi (Nov 2023)

90 Points- Wine Advocate:
"Pahlmeyer's 2021 Jayson Chardonnay is nicely balanced, in a restrained, sedate format, with subtle nutty and creamy notes set against oak spice, white peaches and ripe pineapple. Primarily a selection of barrels that didn't make the cut for the top bottlings, it's medium to full-bodied, round and generous in the mouth; it's just lacking a bit of intensity and length. It's still an excellent wine." - Joe Czerwinski (Dec 2023)
