About this winery:
Made by the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, Domaine de la Janasse was founded in 1976 by Aimé Sabon, the father of Christophe and Isabelle, after taking over the family vineyards. The property consists of 40 hectares, just about 100 acres, spread over as many as 70 different parcels throughout the south of France. (Previously grapes had been sold to the local cooperative.)

Notes from the Winemaker:
Between blackcurrant and tapenade, Terre d'Argile offers concentrated flavors, reminiscences of its famous neighbor. Dense and meaty, the mouth reveals deep and sweet ripe fruits on a persistent finish, which suggests a few good years of cellar aging. Serve within ten years on lamb chops.

Location: At a stone's throw from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this wine comes from the beautiful land of pebbles and red clay north of the city of Courthazon.

Vineyard: The vines are grown without pesticides or insecticides and manure is natural. The land is worked without herbicide to maintain ventilation and flexibility to the soil. Yield of 46 hl/ha. Syrahs and mourvedres benefit from a very important green harvest.

Grapes: 25% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre, 25% Carignan

Ageing process: 75% in barrels (1/3 new) for syrahs and mourvedres and 25% in big barrels (foudres) for grenaches during 12 months.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling:

"Blue fruits and flowers on the nose. The freshness and open-knit structure make a compelling combination of generously fleshy and flavorsome style. Plums and blackberries throughout. Drink now." (14 Aug, 2017)

90 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"Coming all from clay and pebbly soils located to the north of Chateauneuf du Pape, the 2015 Coes du Rhone Terre d'Argile is a supple, elegant example of this cuvee. Black cherries, garrigue, dried herbs, and licorice give way to a medium-bodied, layered, silky red that's loaded with charm." - Jeb Dunnuck (10/19/2017)

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Ripe, but restrained in style, with pretty, silky tannins carrying crushed cherry and warm plum fruit flavors. Light bergamot and singed alder hints thread the elegant finish. Drink now through 2019. 560 cases imported." - JM
