About the Winery:
The Ink Grade Estate Vineyard claims a view unbeknownst to most in the Napa Valley, lying in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA. Terraced throughout due to the extreme slopes, this mountainside vineyard clings to volcanic “tufa” soils. Ink Grade Estate possesses a raw tension that renders fruit of immense intensity and depth. If ever there was a site that imparted a feeling of reverence, Ink Grade is such a place.

TASTING NOTES
This Sauvignon Blanc possesses tropical components of passionfruit, honeydew, and grapefruit due to the ample sunlight hours present in our vineyard. The volcanic “tufa” soils and unique ripening conditions add an herbal and mineral backdrop of lemongrass and slate. We farm vigilantly to retain these aromatics while at the same time preserving the natural acidity that is needed to keep these wines lifted and never heavy. Working with concrete, stainless steel, and large oak vessels to marry textures and weight, working with lees to enhance the saline quality, and pressing longer to build structure and expose a minor note of bitterness on the finish. We are extremely proud of the poise in this wine and know that it will be a pillar for Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

2020 VINTAGE INSIGHTS
The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc is a wine of extraordinary precision and nuance. Sourced from vines planted in 1996 in volcanic soil, the nose expresses aromatic white flowers, notes of flint, and citrus curd. The medium-bodied palate carries the integration of oak with grace and sophistication, supported by a racy backbone and subtly creamy texture. A beautiful balance between opulence and tension, the finish is long and mineral laced.

Ratings & Reviews:

94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Distinctive, with an aromatic swirl of honeysuckle, a whiff of resinous smoke and flavors of grilled peach. Reveals touches of marmalade, toasted sesame and mouthwatering salted lime, with toasted herb, candied ginger and rooibos tea elements lingering on the finish. Drink now. 543 cases made." - MaryAnn Worobiec (April 2024)

93 Points - Vinous:
"The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc is generous and expansive in feel. Lemon confit, mango, mint, apricot and light tropical accents all grace this exotic Sauvignon Blanc. I have never tasted anything quite like it. The viscous textural profile is especially distinctive and compelling." - Antonio Galloni (October 2022)

93 Points - Decanter:
"Such a fascinating white wine, worthy of long, contemplative sips. Ink Grade’s only white wine is elegantly structured and medium- to full-bodied with length and layers. The nose immediately stands out with agave, baked apples, pears, and honeycomb. The palate is impressively tart from the laser-like acidity; underneath, it boasts a waxy texture. Apricots emerge, intermixed with wild herbs, and there’s a backbone of stony minerality and a touch of honey on the finish. Vines are planted on volcanic tufa soil on a slope of Howell Mountain. Entirely native yeast fermented and aged in concrete eggs and large oak casks." - Jonathan Cristaldi (February 2023)

92 Points - James Suckling:"Lots of dried apricot, peaches and sliced red apple. Full and layered with a rich and oily character. Lots of phenolic texture. Remains lively. Made in concrete, stainless and cask. Exotic nature to this. Sauvignon blanc planted on Howell Mountain in 1996. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink now." (March 2023)
