High West Distillery Named Whisky Advocate's 23rd Annual Distiller of the Year Award

“High West delivers innovative and delicious whiskeys, expands the definition of what it is to be a distiller, and pioneered a successful new paradigm for craft distilling."

Distillery Notes:

High West is bringing back its Campfire expression, a blend of whiskies ranging in age from 4 to 15 years. The blend for this iteration is as follows:

Straight rye from MGP (95% rye, 5% barley malt)
Straight bourbon from MGP (75% corn, 21% rye, 4% barley malt)

High West’s own whiskey (80% rye, 20% malted rye)

Blended malt scotch from an undisclosed source.

The final mix will be different from year to year.

ABV: 46%

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Floral, fruity, bright and spicy, caramel, butterscotch, Light smoke and smoldering wood from a campfire the morning after, jasmine, chai tea, sandalwood, leather, tobacco, pine resin and toasted bread.

Palate: Vanilla, honey, toffee with some nice fruit, blueberries and black cherries, chai spices - nutmeg, cinnamon, orange zest, salty caramels, tobacco, gentle smoke!

Barrel Types:

Gold - SF World Spirits Competition 2023

"Few blends are as inventive as Campfire, which has the rare distinction of blending together whiskies from multiple continents. Campfire landed at No. 14 on our 2017 Top 20 list, though this new iteration is slightly different. We are curious to compare it to previous batches." - Whisky Advocate

91 Points, Rank #14, Whisky Advocate Top 20 of 2017

"An oddball that crosses the divide between American whiskey and scotch by literally mixing the two, Campfire combines straight Indiana rye, straight Indiana bourbon, and peated blended malt scotch, marrying them together in heavily toasted French and Hungarian oak wine barrels. The scotch adds hearty, meaty flavors to the dry, spicy, and rich bourbon and rye. This is a robust and beefy whiskey, with smoke reminiscent of Southern barbecue. Earlier releases of this ambitious whiskey didn't quite hit the mark. Now, it's right on target."

"The sip opens with a billowing burst of dominant scotch influenced notes. A heavy campfire aroma lifts out of the glass and is propped up by scents of peat, toasted marshmallows, and hickory wood. While the scotch influence is still present in the midpoint of the sip, notes of vanilla, light oak, sweet corn, and light spices help tamper it and add gentleness to the sip. The finish ends on more traditional American whiskey notes of oak, sweet vanilla, rye, and cinnamon spice. There’s a touch of peat, but in general, the scotch influence tends to dissipate as it transitions to the end of the sip. Overall this is an interesting cross between American whiskey and scotch whiskey, and a nice crossover for someone coming from the world of scotch but looking to break into American whiskeys." - Breaking Bourbon
