Crozes-Hermitage is the largest of the appellations of the Northern Rhône, comprising just over 2500 acres planted to Syrah for red wine and Marsanne and Roussanne for white. The vineyards are largely on the plain, producing reasonably priced and straightforward wines, but there are also some superb hillside vineyards which provide concentrated, long-lived wines. In general, the red wines have prototypical Syrah flavors, spicy and persistent, with vigor and intensity of flavor in an appealingly rustic style.
Guigal produced a red Crozes-Hermitage for the first time in the 1999 vintage, supplementing wines made from his own vineyards by selecting new wines from more than a dozen cellars, focusing exclusively on cuvées from low-yielding hillside vineyards. This entry to Northern Rhone reds and Syrah from Guigal is a serious wine that delivers quality and pleasure far above its price.

Eye : Dark and deep colour.
Nose : Red fruits, cherry and strawberry with delicate oak aromas.
Palate : A structured tannic wine. Aromas of blackcurrant buds and vanilla.
Overall : Remarkable freshness with notable and refined tannins to due long oak ageing.

"As we tasted the 2015 Crozes Hermitage, Philippe Guigal said, "It's rare we get full phenolic ripeness in Crozes. We got that in 2015." The wine's silky tannins certainly support his claim. It's medium to full-bodied, with raspberry, cherry and black olive aromas and flavors that scream of the variety, and it has a long finish. Juicy and broad in the mouth, offering concentrated boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors that become spicier as the wine opens up. "The nose is subtle on this elegant Syrah but the palate opens gradually to introduce layer upon layer of silky, sun-kissed blackberry and plum flavors. It's ripe but restrained, muted by a granitic mineral tone and crisp red-currant acidity. The long finish lingers on fine, framing tannins.
