About the Winery:
It didn’t take the Groth family long to know that in buying the Oakville Estate, they had acquired a special property. The first recognition that immediately put Groth on the map and confirmed their credentials was when Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate gave the Groth 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon the distinction of being the first 100-point wine from the United States. This sparked feverish demand for the wine.

The Groth family’s commitment to quality continues to draw recognition. Groth wines have been ranked on Wine Spectator’s prestigious Top 100 Wines list eight times in the winery’s history, most recently in 2019, when the 2016 Reserve Cabernet was No. 4.

About the Wine:

This library re-release of Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon in magnum comes from the spectacular 2013 vintage, which was remarkable for its lack of drama. Described by retired Groth Winemaker Emeritus Michael Weis as “leisurely” from a winegrowing and winemaking perspective, 2013 was a growing season in which Mother Nature generously provided perfect weather that translated to a benchmark vintage of wines in Napa Valley.

“There was no need to be frantic about picking,” Weis recalls. “We were all very relaxed. We were able to pick when the grapes were at their finest, giving us outrageous color and bodacious tannin structure in the reds.”

“It was a perfect vintage. … It was a wonderful year to be a winemaker.”

— Michael Weis, retired Winemaker Emeritus

The Reserve Vineyard, nearly 28 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, is an anomaly within the greater 121 acres that comprise the Groth Oakville Estate, and within the Oakville AVA itself. The soils set this narrow band of vineyard apart. While generally described as gravelly, sandy loam, they also feature an abundance of red chert, a hard sedimentary rock made up of small quartz crystals and fossils. These rocks were deposited in this thin sliver of land by an alluvial fan flowing out of the Vaca Range to the east millions of years ago. Found in disproportionate amounts in this part of Oakville, they represent the heart and soul of the “sweet spot” we call our Reserve Vineyard.

Tasting Notes:
The 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has clean, rich aromas with great complexity. It shows prominent notes of cedar, dried cherries and sweet vanilla along with hints of warm summer blackberries, ripe dark plum, forest humus and a touch of thyme. The flavors open with a smooth entry and build quickly with loads of fine-grained tannins, giving a very broad mouthfeel. All this structure is backed up with a nice firm acidity, bright red currant and ripe dark cherry fruit, as well as more subtle impressions of cocoa, oak spice and savory herbs.

Technical Information:

Varietal Composition: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot

Aging: 25 months in barrel; 16 months in bottle; 100% new French Oak

ABV: 14.9%

Ratings & Reviews

94+ Points - Vinous:
"The personality of this great Napa Valley vintage comes through loud and clear in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Dark, imposing and tannic, the 2013 is also going to need quite a bit of time to come around. The inclusion of 24% Merlot has softened some of the contours, but the 2013 is a decidedly big wine. Lavender, violet, mint and black cherry add the nuance." Drink 2020-2033. - Antonio Galloni (May 2016)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Focused, with a core of black currant and fig reduction notes unwinding slowly, while graphite, espresso crema and roasted cedar accents underscore the finish. Shows just a touch of grain through the savory-tinged finish, but is otherwise on point. Blind 2013 California Cabernet retrospective (February 2023). Drink now through 2034. 3,400 cases made." - James Molesworth (September 2023)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This wine is sourced from a unique block in the heart of the appellation and the producer's 165-acre estate, rich in sedimentary rock fragments of quartz and fossils. It's lush and soft on the palate, with leather, ripe red berry and cassis flavors. The tannins are strong and wrapped tenaciously around the fruit, requiring further time in bottle; drink 2020–2028." - Virginie Boone (May 2017)
