This traditionally-styled winery's origins date back to the mid-1800s, when Giuseppe Mascarello made a name for himself managing the vineyards of other landowners, and which ultimately culminated in the purchase of his own vineyards and cellars in 1881 in the village of Monforte d'Alba.

Mauro Mascarello has been the winemaker for the Giuseppe Mascarello estate since the late 1960s, succeeding his father, Giuseppe, and his grandfather, Maurizio, both legends in their time. And like them, Mauro is a traditionalist dedicated to long fermentations and aging in old botti. But Mauro has also made important changes, not the least of which was the creation of a single Barolo from the great Monprivato vineyard in 1970. Prior to that year, his family had always made their towering Barolos and Barolo Riservas by blending Monprivato fruit with grapes from other sites.

About this Wine:
Few Barolo vineyards have either the history or the prestige of Castiglione Falletto’s Monprivato. Named in local land registries as early as 1666, it was, in 1985, on Renato Ratti’s short list of the eleven greatest historic vineyards of Barolo. The relationship between the Mascarello family and Monprivato dates back to 1904, when Mauro’s grandfather Maurizio bought the vineyard.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Grape-variety: Nebbiolo
Vineyard: Monprivato®, in the village of Castiglione Falletto (CN)
Grape Harvest: Towards the middle of October.
Wine-making process: Estate-grown bunches thinned during the summer undergo traditional-style, floating cap fermentation for 20/25 days. The palate is seamless and similar to 2018 in terms of its elegance, but this wine has more structure, well-defined, even tannins, and a bit more body through the mid-palate while still retaining a very approachable and joyful feel. This will be a wine with a wide window for enjoyment and is one of the highlights of this vintage for me. It offers so much pleasure now, and I anticipate it will continue to improve over the coming decades. Bravo. Vibrant acidity and refined tannins lend support as the aftertaste echoes the red fruit notes. I would describe this as a more accessible Barolo overall, with silky tannins and a very pleasurable display of bright cherry fruit, cassis, sweet almond and blue flower. It appears lifted and bright to the palate and tastes great straight out of the gate. However, it has the stuffing for aging if you choose." – Monica Larner (Jan 2025)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0481/8940/7391/files/MascarelloBaroloMonprivato12-w-2_58b69cf9-6011-4a78-ac3e-ae0f974dc1c4.jpg?v=1704403498
https://artisan.wine/products/giuseppe-mascarello-e-figlio-barolo-monprivato-docg-2020-piedmont-italy-jd-98-ws-96-wa-94
