About the Winery:

Nicolas Chiquet farms 23 hectares in the Valle de la Marne in the villages of Ay, Dizy, Hautvillers and Mareuil-sur-Ay. All of the fruit (including that which is used in the non-vintage cuvee) comes from Premier and Grand Cru grapes. Nicolas does not employ any oak aging at Gaston Chiquet; he believes that concentration, fruit maturity and malolactic fermentation impart enough body and texture to make aging in barrel unnecessary.

The vineyards are planted to equal (forty percent each) parts Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and twenty percent are planted to Pinot Noir. Gaston-Chiquet also produces a vintage dated Chardonnay from 5 parcels on the western side of the Grand Cru village of Ay. Usually recognized as a grand cru village for Pinot Noir, these vines of Chardonnay were planted in Ay in the 1930s.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The NV Brut Cuvée de Réserve is endowed with terrific energy and cut. There is plenty of drive here. Pear, spice, dried flowers, mint and apricot are all beautifully delineated. This is pretty, tightly wound, but compelling just the same. Disgorged: October, 2020." - Antonio Galloni (Nov 2021)

92 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The NV Champagne Cuvée de Reserve Brut is 40% Meunier, 35% Chardonnay, and the rest to Pinot Noir. It is 93% from the 2013 vintage with the small remainder from 2009. Loads of ripe fruit, kirsch, boysenberry liqueur, and a bit of shitake (umami) is followed by a boldness on the palate, although it doesn’t have a tremendous amount of depth beyond that. It is balanced, though, and another great autumnal, food-friendly wine I would recommend at the table for pairing. Drink 2022-2036." - Audrey Frick (November 2022)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Disgorged in February 2019 after 84 months sur lattes, the NV Brut Cuvée de Réserve from Gaston Chiquet is showing well, offering up a classy bouquet yellow orchard fruit, warm biscuits, hazelnuts and peach. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming, it's deep and layered, with a sweet core of fruit and an ultra-refined mousse. While it's hard to resist today, such is the wine's inherent generosity, a few more years on cork will be rewarded with even greater complexity." - William Kelley (Apr 2020)

91 Points - Wine Spectator:
" This expressive Champagne leads with ripe and juicy black cherry and black raspberry fruit, with chopped almond, candied lemon peel and fleur de sel accents. Bright and creamy, with a spiced finish. Disgorged October 2020. Drink now. 95 cases imported." - Alison Napjus (November 2022)

91 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"A terrific expression of a Pinot-dominated wine from sites around the village of Dizy, with Meunier in the ascendant, lending notes of brioche, soft red fruit and an approachably fruity personality. The wine wears its 8 g/L of sugar effortlessly, and combines an autolytic elegance, courtesy the inclusion of a healthy slug of reserve wines, with a complexity bequeathed by long ageing on the lees." -Simon Field MW (June 2021)
