About the Winery:
The history of Freemark Abbey began in 1886, when Josephine Marlin Tychson became the first woman to build and operate a winery in California. The historic site where Josephine's winery, Tychson Cellars, once stood is now known as Freemark Abbey.

In the years that followed, Freemark Abbey went through a period of several different owners until 1966, when a group of partners purchased the winery. In only their second vintage, their Cabernet was selected to compete in The Judgement at Paris!

For four decades, until 2020, Ted Edwards was the winemaker, and while he is still on staff as winemaker emeritus and participates in various blending trials, day-to-day winemaking is now helmed by Kristy Melton, the winery's second woman winemaker. Since 2006, Freemark Abbey has been part of the Jackson Family Wines (JFW) portfolio.

About this Wine:
Located on the southern end of the Rutherford Bench, the small 24-acre (located about 1.2 miles south of Bosché) Sycamore Vineyard’s proximity to the Mayacamas Mountains provides the perfect climate for growing a rich, textured Cabernet. The wine is intense in aromatic complexity, reminiscent of blackberry, pomegranate syrup, black tea, and forest floor. The palate is rich and textured with flavors of forest fruits, dark chocolate, bay leaf, and warm oak spices. The ‘Rutherford dust’ is evident in the tannin structure, giving it textures that are bold but integrated, making it lovely to drink now with the capability to age in the cellar for decades.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Opaque dark ruby describes the color of this Rutherford wine. Black currant and Boysenberry notes dominate the aroma, with dark chocolate truffle, cocoa powder,  Worcestershire sauce, cremini mushrooms and forest floor adding to the complexity. The oak adds the ideal amount of complexity with aromatic cedar, cinnamon and clove. The wine has great depth of black fruit flavor, with a strong expression of sweet black cherry. This full-bodied cabernet sauvignon has resolved tannins yet firm structure, with good acidity. Lovely long finish!

Grape Variety: 88.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.2% Petit Verdot, 2.2% Cabernet Franc, 7.1% Merlot

Aging: Aged in 100% French Oak (66% new) for 27.2 months

Ratings & Reviews:

96 Points - James Suckling:
"Extremely floral and subtle red fruit, such as redcurrants. Medium-to full-bodied with tight, caressing tannins that lead you down to the finish. Tight and reserved. Shows finesse and beauty. Lovely to taste now, but it will be so much better in three or four years. Drink after 2022." (Jan 2020)

95+ Points - Wine Advocate:
"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sycamore Vineyards gives up powerful crème de cassis, dark chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries and baked plums scents with hints of lavender, camphor, pencil shavings and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with rich, black fruits plus a beautiful perfumed undercurrent, framed by finely grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing with a mineral lift. 1,989 cases were made." – LBP (Sep 2019)

95+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"From a vineyard closer to the Mayacamas Mountains and first made in 1980, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sycamore Vineyard checks in as 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It spent 27 months in 66% new French. It offers more black fruits, earth, tobacco, cedar, and gravelly minerality as well as a touch more burly, masculine style on the palate. Nevertheless, it's still beautifully balanced, has considerable elegance, and a great finish." (Jan 2020)

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Herbal, with characteristics of peppercorn, cedar and pencil shavings, this beautiful wine is also dusty and mineral-driven, with demure flavors of red and black currant. Full bodied and well structured, it shows an underlying softness that should continue to soften in the cellar. Enjoy best from 2026–2031." – Virginia Boone (Jul 2020)

93 Points - Vinous Media:
“The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sycamore is dark and beautifully resonant from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, mocha, dark spice and licorice infuse the 2016 with notable character as well as volume. Ample and expansive on the palate, with tremendous depth, the 2016 has so much to offer.” - Antonio Galloni (Jan 2020)
