About this Winery:
Widely recognized as one of the most exceptional of the small, independent sherry houses, Rey Fernando de Castilla was originally founded in 1837 by a family named Andrada-Vanderwilde; Fernando Andrada was the owner and the winery trademarked the name Rey Fernando de Castilla in 1969.
In 1999, the house was purchased by Jan Pettersen, a Norwegian with a passion for top quality sherry and 15 years experience at Osborne. After taking over the cellars of the sherry shipper José Bustamante, located next door to the main facilities of Fernando de Castilla, Jan quickly revitalized this winery, and today they are once again known as masters of the production and aging of fine, unblended, untreated sherries.
About this Wine:
Proprietor Jan Pettersen has been living in Jerez, and been in the Sherry business for over 40 years. After all this time, Jan knows everyone there is to know from the region. Sometimes those relationships bring about unusual finds, because if you find something unusual, you know to call Jan.
This find was a single barrel that lived with the same wealthy family, in Jerez for around 80 years. The evaporation rate had gone way down, there was 2/3 of the barrel left. He bottled around 200 375 ml bottles. Each bottle is individually numbered. It’s singular because it is just one, extremely old and rare cask. When it’s gone, it’s gone.
