Vineyard
Site: Clos Vougeot is a large vineyard (50 hectares - 125 acres) located bewteen Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny. Joseph Drouhin owns two parcels in this mythical vineyard, both on a mild incline with a due east exposure.
History & tradition: the most glorious and famous of all Burgundy vineyards. The Clos (French for "enclosure") was first planted and surrounded by a wall at the end of the 12th Ce
ntury by the monks of Citeaux. They built a castle which is now the seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.

Soil: very diverse and a true mosaic, a mix of clay and limestone in various proportions.
Drouhin estate: 0,90 ha. (2.25 acres).
Average of the vines: 31 years.

Tasting note

By Véronique Boss-Drouhin:
"A revelation and a true wonder! The ruby red colour is magnificent and takes on a deeper hue with age. The aromas are intense and evoke raspberry and wild cherry, becoming more complex with age: undergrowth, truffle, candied fruit. A sublime structure, with refined tannins. It is a perfect example of this ideal of elegance according to Drouhin. A remarkable balance and a lingering persistence of flavors on the palate. It is a wine that always leaves the greatest impression".

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - James Suckling:
"This is a Clos de Vougeot with a dense and velvety texture that shows richness and structured. Yet, there is a friendliness and polish to the palate. Hazelnut and cream undertones. Reserved and almost shy at this point. Savory and flavorful. Drink in 2021." - (Feb 2018)

95 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound

93-95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru felt just a little disjointed compared to its peers at first and will hopefully gain more cohesion during the remainder of its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, raspberry preserve and cranberry tinged with white pepper, long in the mouth with a structured finish that bodes well for the future. Wait for the aromatics to get their act together, and you will have a very fine Clos de Vougeot that I suspect will rank alongside their 2015, if not surpass it." - Neal Martin (Dec 2017)

93 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"The Clos Vougeot is a real success this year, offering up notes of plum, cassis, smoked duck and incense, followed by a full-bodied, fine-grained palate with a good core of fruit, lots of incipient savoury complexity, and a long, penetrating finish. With a decade of bottle age this will be lovely." - William Kelley (Oct 2017)

90-92 Points - Aintonio Galloni's Vinous Media:
"Good medium red. Deep, ripe aromas of cherry, underbrush, menthol and spicy oak. Richer on entry than the Petits-Monts, then more solid but less sweet in the middle palate, with redcurrant and menthol flavors that reminded me a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. This youthfully brooding wine finishes classically dry, with building tannins." - Stephen Tanzer (Jan 2018)
