Notes from the Winemaker:
Michel Niellon, who began working with his father Marcel in 1957, has crafted more than 50 vintages of extraordinary wines. From the original 4-hectare estate in Chassagne-Montrachet, Michel has built a notable reputation, creating rich, ripe premiers and grands crus white Burgundies as well as a small amount of excellent premier cru red. Today, three generations of the Niellon family currently work at the domaine. With the help of his son-in-law, Michel Coutoux, who joined him in 1991, Niellon has increased the estate鈥檚 production by buying new vineyards and building a larger winery. His grandson, Matthieu Bresson, also joined the winery, after graduating from La Lyc茅e Viticole in Beaune. Each generation contributes their unique knowledge and expertise to create the finest wines. Grapes come from a 0.3 acre plot.

Like many vignerons in Burgundy, the vineyard work is done almost entirely by the family, under the sustainable practice of 'lutte raisonnee'. By planting finer clones in the last 25 years, as many as five per parcel, the balance and complexity of their wines has been elevated and further raised the already prestigious image of the Domaine. The wines express the purity聽and finesse of terroir. They are聽crafted for early accessibility, yet聽with the potential for aging.聽

Clos Saint-Jean is planted almost entirely to Chardonnay, but the small section where Pinot Noir is grown has conditions very similar to those of the red wine vineyards in neighboring Santenay. Pretty red-cherry and raspberry aromas pick up some black pepper spice and deeper fruit on the palate.

Tasting Notes:
The color is medium ruby in the glass. On the nose, c
herry pie, red plum, candied orange peel jump from the glass. It is聽savory with notes of bay leaf and minerality.
On the palate, red fruit, raspberries, pomegranate come forward, along with roasted聽root vegetables, dried mushrooms and a bit of聽tar. The wine is vibrant with a silky texture and silky聽mouthfeel.聽A lovely Morey full of aroma and flavor.

Fermentation Practices:聽Grapes fermented in stainless steel tanks and聽near the end of fermentation, the wine is聽transferred to small oak barrels to ferment聽dry and complete malolactic fermentation聽during barrel aging. Bat么nnage is used聽sparingly as the wines of Chassagne are聽already rich.
Aging:8-9 months in 20-30% new oak
