Notes from the Winemaker:
Méo-Camuzet is one of the most celebrated domaines of the Côte d’Or, located in the heart of prestigious Vosne-Romanée. The domaine boasts fourteen hectares of land in some of the most spectacular appellations and crus of Burgundy. The vineyard land in Burgundy is highly parceled out among families, which makes it rare for anyone to have enough vines to be able to bottle one grand cru, let alone the six that the Méos have. Founder Étienne Camuzet was not only a passionate vigneron, but a full-time politician, and spent most of his time in Paris, representing the Côte d’Or. In order to keep his land in use, he offered it to capable share-croppers to farm. By the time his daughter had inherited the estate, she found herself with no successors, so the estate was passed down to her closest relative, Jean Méo, who was also involved in politics:he served as a member of Charles DeGaulle’s cabinet. Jean's son Jean-Nicolas took over in 1985.
Meo-Camuzet Frere et Soeurs is the négociant entity of the family domaine, and works closely with local growers to source the best fruit available in some of Burgundy’s finest terroirs. Vines are tended with the same best practices that the family espouses. The Méos oversee vineyard management, and they care for the wines in the cellars with the same attention to detail and respect of terroir that they do those of the domaine.
The "Hemisphere Nord" is sourced mostly from domaine-owned vines from the Côte de Nuits–Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée, and Vougeot. The 2018 is the first bottling of this 'simple' Bourgogne Rouge. The wine is aged 12 to 15 months in barrel with very little new oak and then 2 to 3 months in stainless steel before bottling. According to Wine Advocate reviewer William Kelley, "The 2018 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Domaine Méo-Camuzet, delivering exquisitely balanced wines that were strikingly expressive, even demonstrative."
