About the WInery:
The La Serena estate has belonged to the Mantengoli family since the 1930s, but they did not start making wine until 1988, when twin brothers Andrea & Marcello entered the family business. What began as a one-hectare farm has since grown into nine hectares, with about six of those under vine, dedicated exclusively to Sangiovese for Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. Andrea has always worked the vineyards in an organic way, but since the 2013 vintage his wines are now officially certified as “Made With Organic Grapes” on the label.

Tasting Notes:
Ruby red color. Etheral, deep, balanced nose with a wide, persistent bouquet and fine touches of fruit and spices. Elegant, soft taste round and velvety to the palate.

Vinification & Viticulture:

  • Certified Organic since 2013
  • 100% Sangiovese from the La Serena estate harvested during the first two weeks of October
  • 400 meters elevation
  • Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel before moving into cask
  • Aged for three years in a combination of 20, 30, 40 and 70 hectoliter French oak casks, plus four months in bottle

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This is full of licorice, tar and leather aromas and flavors, along with accents of chocolate and spice. Solidly built, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. The flavors return on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2037. 2,200 cases made." - BS (Jun 30, 2018)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"La Serena's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a soft and modern wine from this beautiful appellation in southern Tuscany. The bouquet offers a medley of ripe fruit, sweet spice, espresso and a touch of bitter chocolate. The presentation here is supple and smooth. Like many of its peers made in the cooler 2013 vintage, the wine tapers out in terms of volume and texture once it hits the palate. The effect here is more downplayed, elegant and streamlined overall." - Monica Larner (28th Feb 2018)
