About the winery:

Rhone's Jean-Luc Colombo, whom Josh Raynolds of Vinous Media has called "the poster child" of the modern Rhone, is a native of Marseilles, and first developed a strong admiration for the wines of the Rhône Valley in the late 1970s as a pharmacy student. It was not long before Colombo began purchasing and cultivating his own vineyards - first in Cornas then throughout the Rhône Valley and Languedoc, leading to the establishment in 1994 of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo. The wines of Vins Jean-Luc Colombo are all sourced from Colombo's own vineyards and from carefully selected domains under his direct consultation; there are now over two dozen.

In 2010, Laure Colombo, Anne and Jean-Luc's daughter, joined the family business, working alongside her parents. She is now the head winemaker and already making a name for herself as one of the Rhône's rising stars.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Rhone Valley, France. Grapes are hand-picked from vineyards in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône near Cairanne, Rasteau and Vacqueyras. All work in the vineyards is done manually and without the use of pesticides or irrigation, respecting the local environment.

Vinification:
Grapes are hand-picked and fermented at a low temperature in stainless steel tanks. The Clairette is aged in tank. The Roussanne matures in oak (2-5 year-old barrels) for 6 months.

Grape Varieties: 80% Clairette 20% Roussanne.

Tasting Notes

Color: Light straw
Bouquet: Intense floral aromas with scents of peach and melon with herbal and mineral notes.
Taste: This is a complex, crisp and well-balanced wine with flavors of stone fruit, citrus and pear.

Food Pairing:
A food-friendly wine which perfectly matches grilled lamb, pork and assorted cheeses.

Ratings & Reviews

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Bright and floral, exhibiting fennel frond, honeysuckle, verbena and green almond notes. Offers a pure, stony, unadorned finish. Clairette and Roussanne. Drink now. 10,000 cases made." - JM (Nov 2014)

Wine Enthusiast:
Colombo combines freshness (Clairette) with richness (Roussanne) in 4:1 proportion in this wine, which still comes across as slightly soft and broad on the palate. Hints of honey, melon and pear are attractive, as are the citrus notes on the long finish." - JC (8/1/2015)

Vinous Media:
"Pale yellow. Fresh orchard and pit fruit aromas are sharpened by lemon pith and white pepper. Fleshy and dry on the palate, offering bitter pear skin and honeysuckle flavors joined by a deeper touch of nectarine on the back half. Finishes with good cling and bite, repeating the lemon and pear notes." - Josh Raynolds (Feb 2015)
