Notes from the Winemaker:
The Brunello Prime Donne is produced only in the best vintages. It is the estate flagship and represents its commitment in favour of equal opportunities for women in the wine world. It in fact is made in a winery staffed only by women and is selected by a group of four expert female tasters who decide in which barrels it is to be aged and the final assembling. These are the English Master of Wine Maureen Ashley, the Italo-American Pr Marina Thompson, the German wine store owner Astrid Schwarz and one of the best Italian sommeliers Daniela Scrobogna.
Colour: intense ruby red, with a brilliant middle. The wine dances slowly in the glass creating arches.
Aroma: fine, clean, complex, with evident hints of ripe small red fruits, and spices.
Taste: extremely harmonious, deep and elegant. The concentration, the richness and the structure appear to be so well balanced and gratifying .The taste remains pleasantly at length in the mouth.
Matching dishes: important meat dishes, aged cheeses
Way of serving: Room temperature (18-20°C). Use balloon shaped crystal wine goblets. Preferably open one hour before serving
In truncated cone shaped temperature controlled stainless steel vats open on top, and with a plunger. From 20 to 25 days fermentation and maceration with the skins in contact with the must. Excellent extraction of polyphenols, the seeds were perfectly lignified, all of this due to the perfect ripening both from an analytical point of view, like the sugar content and the acidity, and considering the ripeness of the tannins
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"This is a special selezione expression. The Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne starts off a bit closed and shy, however it soon gains speed thanks to the intensity of its berry fruit, spice and camphor ash aromas. This wine is built to withstand longer cellar aging. It is firmly compact and tight at its core, recalling a Brunello from a cooler vintage. However, much of that 2015 sunshine and dark fruit exuberance comes through nonetheless. Fruit comes from a 10-hectare site with a large component of clay in the soils. Only 6,600 bottles were made, and the wine was released in January 2020." - Monica Larner (31st Jan 2020)
94 Points - James Suckling:
"Sliced, ripe strawberries with cherries and licorice and lavender on the nose. Full body. Dense and tight with ripe and polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows power and density. Drink after 2021." - (7 Sep, 2019)
93 Points - Decanter:
"At 225 metres above sea level, Donatella Cinelli Colombini's 40ha Montalcino estate sits in the cool, northern reaches of the region. Called Casato Prime Donna, it is operated entirely by women at all levels of production. The 2015 is certainly the most refined vintage of this wine that I have tasted from the property. It is fresh and bright with enthralling herb, violet and cherry nuances. But it doesn't give everything up all at once: iron notes come out on the palate and powdery tannins brace the compact core. Lovely, lively finish. Drinking Window 2021 - 2031" - Michaela Morris (20 Feb 2020)
