About This Wine:
If after analysis, this is one of the most powerful wines ever produced at Ducru Beaucaillou , from the organoleptic point of view, its attraction lies in its harmony and elegance, its finesse and length so characteristic of Ducru Beaucaillou. Its color is deep red. Its nose, a little restrained at the beginning, opens out to aromas of black fruit, black cherries in particular. It has a fruity attack in the mouth, a dense structure, full and attractive with plenty of freshness. It lingers on the palate, with an exceptionally good length and voluptuous retro-olfactory aromas. Ultimately, it is a great Bordeaux classic, in an athletic body.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"This is a marvelously complete wine, with its impressive ripe fruit, shining through the open structure. It is firm, but not too much. Stone black fruits are just perfectly ripe. There is just a core of dryness to compliment the rest of the wine. Editors' Choice"

95 Points - Decanter:
Now at 20 years of age, the 2001 Ducru-Beaucaillou reveals liquorice, menthol, leather, tobacco and black berry aromas with a smoky hint. The attack is lively and although the palate has a moderately dense structure to it, the tannins are still a bit juicy at this stage. There is a hint of both animal and dark berries on the long, airy finish. It is now on the cusp of its apogee. (Drink between 2022-2030)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Offers a pretty sweetness of fruit, with raspberry and currant coulis notes gliding along a polished structure. Alluring mesquite, incense and rooibos tea elements flow through, revealing a light iron echo on the finish. Modestly sized but well-constructed.—Blind '01/'03/'05 Bordeaux retrospective (December 2017). Drink now through 2025" - JM (web only 2018)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Tasted at Farr’s Ducru-Beaucaillou dinner at the Ledbury. The 2001 Ducru is showing very well, better than I expected given its performances a few years ago. Here, it has a warm, rounded, almost sensual bouquet with black fruits, bay leaf and cedar – certainly more generous and expressive than the 2000 but without the same level of complexity or delineation. The palate is just entertaining the notion of secondary flavours with some intriguing gamey notes infusing the dark black fruit with the finish seasoned by the Cabernet Franc." (11/2011)
