Notes from the Winemaker:
Situated just east of the village of Chateauneuf du Pape, Chateau de Vaudieu lies at the base of the plateau of Mont Redon. Originally named Val de Dieu in 1767 by the Archbishop of Avignon who blessed "this property of vines and groves", the land of Vaudieu has always been known as the Valley of God.
Tasting Notes:
Ruby red in appearance, the nose reveals a subtle mixture of raspberry and cocoa and finishes with smoky notes. The palate is fresh due to a nice concentration of tannins that have a hint of menthol.
Ratings & Reviews
99 Points - Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider:
"Make no mistake, this is off the hook! Deep in color, the wine pops with its array of kirsch, black pepper, black cherry, spice, herbs, plum and thyme on the nose. From there the wine coats your palate with layers of opulently textured, silky red fruits with a gorgeous sense of purity and refinement. The wine is made from 100% old vine, Grenache planted in sandy soils not too far from Chateau Rayas. Drink from 2025 - 2040." (1/9/22)
98+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 100% Grenache 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Amiral G. is totally brilliant, and I’d put it up against anything out there. Deep ruby/purple-hued, with an incredible bouquet of blackberries, ground herbs, cured meats, and peppery spice, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ripe, seamless tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. This is pure Grenache magic and will most likely warrant a triple-digit score in 3-5 years and drink well for 15+. Drink between 2021-2040." (11/3/21)
94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"As always, super ripe, opulent Grenache gives the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Amiral G an air of decadent richness. Scents of dark chocolate, espresso and barrel char accent notes of blackberries and cassis on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is concentrated and rich, even velvety, the flavors and texture showing great intensity and length on the finish. Like the other 2019s at this estate, it could use a little time in bottle to soften the tannins, and then it should drink well for more than a decade." - Joe Czerwinski (May 2022)
94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Lush and inviting, with a caressing feel to the waves of cassis, cherry pâte de fruit and raspberry reduction backed by lingering anise and sweet tobacco notes on the long finish, which echoes with fruit. Best from 2022 through 2035. 300 cases made, 100 cases imported." -JM (10/15/21)
