Exposed to the fog and wind that funnel through the Petaluma Gap, Calesa is a cool-climate vineyard where Chardonnay ripens slowly, developing pure, vibrant flavors and ideal acidity. Farmed by acclaimed grower Oscar Renteria in shallow, gravelly loam soils, our prized hillside blocks at Calesa feature several exceptional clones of Chardonnay. In addition to producing naturally low yields, this diversity of clonal material results in a complex and layered wine with beautiful notes of citrus, tropical fruit and spice.
Growing Season & Harvest:
The 2021 growing season began with one of the driest winters on record, followed by a mild spring and summer with no adverse heat events. Due to the lack of precipitation, canopy growth was limited and the vines produced very small berries and clusters. To ensure ideal ripening and flavor development we closely monitored vine water stress and applied a highly targeted irrigation strategy. While the drought conditions yielded a small crop, the long, temperate growing season combined with ideal weather during harvest produced exceptional quality Chardonnay, with lovely structure and concentration, excellent underlying acidity and soaring varietal flavors.
This beautifully aromatic wine draws you in with tantalizing notes of Mandarin orange, citrus blossom, lychee and guava, as well as hints of brioche, nutmeg, clove and vanilla bean. On the palate it is crisp and vibrant, with creamy textural undercurrents that accentuate the lush layers of lemon custard and tropical fruit, with notions of jasmine and melted butter lingering throughout the long, supple finish.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2021 Chardonnay Calesa Vineyard, matured in 35% new French oak, features intense lemon jelly and nectarine aromas on the nose with wafts of chalk and beeswax. The medium-bodied palate is wonderfully satiny and concentrated, its ripe fruit complemented by energetic acidity and well-integrated oak spices, and it boasts a lengthy, mouth-coating finish with soaring citrus flavors. 1,210 cases were made." - Erin Brooks (June 15, 2023)
