About the Winery:
Castello di Ama sits 12 miles northeast of Siena in the hills of Gaiole. This is the heart of Chianti Classico, a bucolic rolling landscape of woods, vineyards and olive groves. The property is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Marco Pallanti and Lorenza Sebasti. Over the last quarter century they have replanted all of the vineyards and upgraded all of the winemaking capabilities to make this one of Tuscany's showcase producers.

About this Wine:
Haiku originated in 2009 with the acquisition of the Montebuoni vineyard,
whose replanting was completed in 2001.

This standout wine is a blend of three varieties: 50% Sangiovese, with the remainder
divided in equal measure between Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

The name is inspired by the traditional Japanese verse in three phrases, whose power lies in allusionsto nature and which requires clear thinking and imagination. Haiku is a powerful wine, initially supple before impressing with its audacity, substance and refinement.

Tasting Notes:
The wine shows an intense purple red with ruby-red nuances.  The nose is fruity (fruits of the forest, such as raspberry and blackcurrants), spicy (pepper, wild herbs and tobacco), and the palate offers a good attack with a clear identity of the grape varieties. The wine is intrinsically elegant and natural freshness evolving in a silky finish.

Technical Information

Climate:
Wine from vintage 2015 are fresh, with a nice alcohol degree and fruity, due to the significant temperature excursions between night and day during autumn which have facilitated the aromatic structures. Summer started late and first veraison was in early August. Until mid-September there were sunny days and summer heat, then temperatures dropped again, especially at night. After several samples and organoleptic analysis in our vineyards and laboratory, harvest has been carried out by hand in 10-12-kg crates on 14/16th September for Merlot, on 25th September for Malvasia nera and from 2nd to 6th October for Sangiovese.

Vinification:
The vinification started using ambient yeasts, separately for each variety and in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 30/32°, with manual pumpovers and a total cuvaison of 25 days for Sangiovese, 26 days for Merlot and 25 days for Cabernet Franc. After the first racking, the wine was transferred into steel tanks for the malolactic fermentation.

Refinement:
After the malolactic fermentation, the three grape varieties were blended. Then the wine has been transferred in oak barriques of thin grain, 24% of which were new.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - James Suckling:
"Lots of mulberries and plum crumble, as well as mocha and dried lavender. However, if you give this time in the glass, citrus and fresh-herb undertones begin to come to the surface. Full body, finely woven tannins and a delicately delivered serving of blue fruit. A blend of sangiovese, merlot and cabernet franc." (7/2018)

92 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Broad, opulent and solidly built, this red offers a mix of cherry and black currant fruit offsetting the savory, mineral elements of rosemary, sage, salt and earth. Powerful, this ends on the dry side, so enjoy with food. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2032. 25 cases imported." - BS (10/31/2018)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2015 Haiku is a blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Racy and voluptuous, this wine is laced with the essence of dark plum, blueberry jam, spice, new leather and menthol. In this vintage in particular, Haiku is a wine of Ama more than anything else. Soft curves add to the wine's alluring personality." - Antonio Galloni (2/2019)
