About the winery:
Capezzana is located in the DOCG region of Carmignano, 12 miles west of Florence. Next to the Chianti district, Carmignano is Tuscany's smallest and oldest DOCG. Wine has been produced from this region since the days of the Etruscans, although today the region actually requires the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon to its wines (rather peculiar for Italy). The winery's history is almost as long - during the Renaissance, the property was controlled by the Medici family. Today, Tenuta di Capezzana accounts for 70 percent of the DOCG wines produced in the area, and the property is run by the Bonacossi family - son Filippo runs the vineyards, daughter Bernadetta makes the wine, and (Countess) Beatrice handles commercial matters.
Notes from the Winemaker:
Villa di Capezzana is the flagship wine of the Tenuta di Capezzana estate and representative of Carmignano's greatest quality. It goes well with all meats in general and with cheeses. Intense ruby red, elegant, with notes of black cherry and raspberry well blended with ripe fruit. Soft, enveloping in the mouth, with soft tannins and good body. Acidity is present, but well balanced by tannic richness. Long finish, with an aftertaste that tends towards sweet licorice.
Varietals: 80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine is intense ruby red in color with youthful highlights. On the nose, there are notes of almonds, violets and oranges which are intertwined with aromas of coffee and vanilla. It is a full-bodied wine with well-balanced acidity. The rounded tannins from the Sangiovese are lifted by the cassis concentration of the Cabernet on the long, concentrated finish.
Ratings & Reviews
95 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Mainly Sangiovese. Has an enticing nose with ripe red and black fruits and a floral perfume. Firm tannins but a lovely texture and understated oak. Plenty of future." - Andy Howard, MW
94 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2015 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is bright, lifted and full of personality. Sweet red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, sage and dried flowers all grace this juicy, mid-weight wine. The 2015 is impeccably balanced and a joy to taste." - Antonio Galloni (Apr 2021)
93 Points - James Suckling:
"Fascinating aromas of blueberries, orange peel and watermelon following through to a full body. Round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Lots of toasted oak showing now, but it should come out beautifully with bottle age. Made from organically grown grapes. Try in 2020." (July 2018)
91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Made with organic fruit, the 2015 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon (aged in tonneaux for 12 months). This is the flagship wine made by this estate, and it has been in production since 1925. This warm vintage opens to abundant fruit with black cherry and blackberry at the front. Softer tones of spice, leather and tobacco fill in the rear. You get great value in this easy-drinking mid-weight Tuscan red. Some 70,000 bottles were produced." - Monica Larner (May 2019)
