About this Wine:

Home to some of Washington State’s most celebrated vineyards, Red Mountain is renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon. With ideal southwest-facing slopes and significant day and nighttime temperature swings, this small but highly prized area in Eastern Washington produces exceptional wines. Named for the Canvasback duck, which is native to the Pacific Flyway, this wine was crafted from grapes cultivated by some of Red Mountain’s finest growers. With Canvasback, our aim is to express and develop the depth, structure and sophistication that define wines from this young and exciting appellation.

Varietal Composition: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Malbec

Winemaker Notes

From its inviting aromas of Damson plum, blueberry, black licorice and sarsaparilla to its holiday spice undercurrents of cardamom and cinnamon, this tantalizing wine rises from the glass beckoning a first sip. On the palate, a lovely mélange of dark red and black fruit flavors glide across plush tannins, with hints of incense, earth and graphite adding depth and nuance to a long, mineral-driven finish.

Production

A cold, dry winter on Red Mountain was followed by an equally cool spring, which led to a slightly later-than-normal budbreak and bloom. Following mid-June rains that significantly reduced the size of the crop, the weather turned hot in July and August, and we began picking our Syrah, Merlot and Malbec the first week of September. While the outbreak of wildfires in Oregon was a concern, after travelling more than 200 miles to Red Mountain, the impact of the smoke was minimal, and we were careful to exclude any impacted grapes. Instead, the driving characteristic of the vintage was the low yields, which despite the cool weather allowed the grapes to get beautifully ripe, producing wines with dark colors, plush creamy textures and rich, vibrant flavors.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - The Wine Independent:

"Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Canvasback Cabernet Sauvignon skips out with energetic scents of fresh red currants, cassis, and black raspberries, followed by hints of spearmint, red roses, and bay leaves, plus a touch of crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate is filled with vibrant red and black berry flavors, supported by a refreshing line and soft, finely-grained tannins, finishing with a minty lift. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 2% Malbec, aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 40% new." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (November 2024)

92 Points - Decanter:

"Ripe and robust, it is sourced from vineyards across Red Mountain. Spicy black plum aromatics, alongside smoked cedar, crushed black stone, and anise, introduce a ripe and generous Cabernet. The palate is intense and concentrated, with rich black cherry flesh, white and black pepper, and a note of kirsch that carries the lengthy finish." Drink 2024-2031. - Clive Pursehouse (June 2024)

92 Points - James Suckling:

"This is a focused cabernet that has ripe plums, blackberries, tea leaves and dark chocolate on the nose. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a nicely linear and balanced finish. Drink or hold." (February 2024)

91 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

"Bright cassis, plums, spicy oak, and chocolate notes all emerge from the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain, a nicely textured, medium to full-bodied blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. It's a ripe, nicely oaked, balanced, impressive Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the coming 10-12 years." (July 2024)

90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

"Imagine black cherries and a cedar box that once housed Punch Gran Puro cigars. That's how this wine makes its aromatic introduction. Then the medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon delivers black-fruit flavor to go with dark-chocolate and balsa notes. Modest acidity is joined by grippy tannins, so prepare to decant." - Michael Alberty (July 2024)
