2001 Vintage:

Color: dark. You can just see through it—barely. Hint of evolution. Nose: signature anise and orange peel form the top notes over a mid-range of oak and spice with a base of roasted meat. Palate: sweet entry, fully structured body, flows to balanced, slightly “grippy,” rustic tannins. Exhibits a pleasingly refined mouth feel and a long finish. Don’t ask me how the wine tastes—it’s up to you to tell us, but I know you will like it!

Grape Varieties: 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 5% Malbec

89 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"What to make of this wine? It's young, with rich, soft, fine tannins framing powerful fruit, backed by a grip of acidity. Cherries, especially, but also black raspberries, with potent Asian spices. There's a trace of raisining, which makes me wonder if it's good for the long haul. But it's certainly very good now."

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This is a ruggedly tannic youngster with more than its share of earth and leather. Luckily, there's enough currant and blackberry fruit to hold interest, but the offsetting flavors make it a dicey wine for most. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Drink now through 2010. 5,650 cases made." - JL (Web Only - 2005)

2002 Vintage:

The 2002 Cain Five is very round, smooth, and full-bodied. It is quite drinkable today, but it will develop in the next couple of years, and it is sure to last 15 or more years. Although the first notes are of mocha and vanilla, a very pure cassis is hiding in the background (which bodes well), and the full, sweet entry fills out to a satisfying mid-palate, leading to a long, smooth finish.

Grape Varieties: 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 19% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec

2003 Vintage:

Ripe and balanced, with floral notes, the wine is a bit tighter and slightly less evolved than the 2002—which suggests that our 2003 Cain Five will age extremely well. It will drink well now and in the next few years, and it should also show well 10 to 15 years from now. This is a firmly structured wine—the nose is discretely subtle, a very pure cassis is hiding in the background (which bodes well)—it sings a quiet, clear note all the way through to the end. The full, sweet entry fills out to a satisfying mid-palate, leading to a long, smooth finish.

Grape Varieties: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 19% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Creamy oak, dried currant and loamy earth flavors are intense, concentrated and, given the narrow flavor profile, well-proportioned. Ends with dry, herbal tannins. Decant. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. 5,917 cases made." – JL (Web Only - 2007)
