Vineyard Notes:
The Monte Sereno vineyard, located at 2,100 ft in elevation on the western slopes of High Valley Appellation, was planted in 2001 and represents our finest Syrah from this signature vineyard. The soils on this ridge top are primarily broken shale characteristic of Franciscan formation (ancient seabed floor) with a light dusting of red volcanic soils intermixed. The depth and composition of the soil creates a microclimate that stresses the vines limiting grape yields, which translates into a wine of increased concentration and intensity of dark, ripe berry fruit characteristics. Much of this vineyard has a northern exposure which delays ripening by a couple of weeks giving the fruit some additional hang time, and subsequently softer, velvety tannins.

Tasting Notes:
Deep brooding aromas of ripe plums, blackberries, cedar, fennel, and a hint of violets. On the palate the flavors mirror the aromas followed by soft, silky tannins that lead to a supple finish.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2003 Vintage):
"Very tannic, a challenge the winemaker will have to deal with, but there’s enormous promise in this new, unexplored appellation of Lake County. Complex, this wine is marked by peppery blackberry fruit and licorice, with a rich vein of sweet new leather. Has that undefinable take-a-second-sip quality. Drink now, but decant for a few hours." - S.H. (12/31/2006)
