The deep black fruit, is almost always dominated by the plumb and supported by mineral notes, chocolate and balsamic sensations, that form an ensemble that slowly flows from the furthest side of the glass until it becomes huge in the entrance of the nose. In the mouth, the volume becomes evident, the fruit complexity nicely surrounds the mouth cavity showing the numerous and polished tannins. The wine gets longer making stronger the retro nasal sensation every time we breathe. A fruity and fresh sensation will last, inviting us to continue drinking.

Winemaking

Grape varieties: 100% Tempranillo
Vineyard: Bush vines over 30 years old, yields limited to 1,5 kgs per vine
Fermentation: In French oak vats, with controlled temperature.
Ageing: In 50% brand new and 50% second use, French oak barrels. 16 months in barrels and 20 months cellaring in bottle.
Stabilization: Completely natural methods, clarification using only egg whites
Alcohol: 14.5% Vol

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - James Suckling:
"Immense depth and exuberance here. Fine spices, dark plums, fresh blackberries, blueberries, graphite and crushed stones. Naturally concentrated, broad, vertical and full-bodied, but still fluid and linear. Crumbled, dusty tannins grow on the palate, leading it to a juicy, tightly wound finish that goes on and on. One of the best Roda I? Drinkable now upon decanting, but much better from 2025." (Aug 2023)

94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"In the 2019 Roda I, I found notes that I had found in many 2019s—ripe black fruit, an earthy touch and a touch of dark spices. It's medium to full-bodied, combining power, concentration, ripeness and elegance in a clean and modern style. It matured in French oak barrels, 50% of them new, but it’s not really noticeable, for 16 months." - Luis gutierrez (Feb 2024)

94 Points - Tim Atkin, MW:
"Roda I uses grapes from bush vines that are over 30 years' old, partnering Tempranillo with 12% Graciano. Showing a little bit of the heat of the vintage, it's a bold, structured, hightoned red with well-handled 50% new oak, top notes of liquorice and Mediterranean herbs and flavours of mulberry, fig and bramble. 2025-2032."

94 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Very recognisable as Rioja reserva, this displays balance and poise with a lovely use of well-integrated, chocolatey and graphite oak. Blueberry fruit on the palate gives way to black pepper spice and present but well-managed tannins that frame the wine. It is approachable now but has a long life ahead. 93% Tempranillo, 4% Graciano and 3% Garnacha from low-yielding bush vines in Haro and its surrounding villages, undergoing spontaneous fermentation in French oak vats followed by 14 months' ageing in 40% new and 60% second-use French oak barrels, then 20 months cellaring in bottle." - Beth Willard (Mar 2025)

93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Long and supple, this harmonious red offers flavors of ripe black cherry and currant laced with cocoa powder, dried thyme, violet, mineral and smoked paprika notes. Its refined structure is framed by fine-grained, muscular tannins and balsamico-infused acidity. Tempranillo and a dollop of Graciano. Drink now through 2040. 500 cases imported." - Alison Napjus (May 2025)

https://artisan.wine/products/bodegas-roda-roda-i-rioja-reserva-doca-2019-rioja-spain-dm-95-js-94-copy
