About the Wine:
To mark the bi-centenary of Blandy's Madeira in 2011, we decided to bottle this special, limited and numbered edition of Blandy's Bual 1920 in a Magnum bottle. This Vintage Bual aged for 65 years in seasoned American oak casks. A fresh, medium-sweet wine with an intense, exuberant and concentrated bouquet of dried fruits, hints of toffee and a spicy and tobacco aftertaste.

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great global uncertainty. Our records show that total wine exports fall from around 3.3 million litres annually, between 1910 and 1916, to below 1.3 million litres, in 1917 and 1918. Both the Great War and the Russian Revolution had a huge impact on Madeira wine production and sales, followed shortly after by prohibition in the United States.

The 1920 Bual is one of the family’s most iconic wines and to think this wine was crafted in the face of so many adversities is a real testament to the men and women working on the island at the time.

Over the years, different bottlings of the 1920 were released onto the market and all were unique in their own right – each separate bottling style naturally evolved by heat, humidity, cask size and location within our Wine Lodge in Funchal.

Ratings & Reviews

19.5 / 20 Points - Jancis Robinson:
"Deep mahogany colour. Very very quiet on the nose when first poured. Dark. Smells like cherry wood. Then it unhurriedly starts to offer glimpses of its century of secrets. Christmas cake and cherry tobacco. Maraschino. Dark chocolate. Stem ginger. Cinnamon bark. Salty quinine. The masses of acidity begin to build, in a silent roar. It feels, in the mouth, like a carved-emerald bolt of shocking purity. Lime marmalade. Dried lime peel. Dill, tarragon, fennel, caraway, cumin. The spices whorl up and up and catch the light, as if we've walked into an old chapel and disturbed a century of dust. A century of memories. Sweet but it’s bones are dry and the vibrating edges of it are dry. Firm; fierce yet full of grace; the slender power of a ballerina. Rose petals and pine oil. Agonisingly, I had no time to really sit with this wine. My tasting note simply doesn't do it justice." (TC) - (12/22/22)

97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The centenary bottling of Blandy's 1920 Bual is showing superbly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dried figs, walnuts, caramelized citrus rind, bitter honey, warm spices and nori. Full-bodied, deep and immensely concentrated, this is a searingly intense, multifaceted and pungently sapid wine of immense vibrancy and persistence; indeed, given its protracted maturation in wood, this Bual represents almost a reduction of Madeira, and each small taste lingers on the palate for minutes." -William Kelley (10/15/20)
