Notes from the Winemaker:
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile. Grapes for this 2022 Private Reserve were picked between August 24 to September 16, 2022.
Vineyard:
Gamble Ranch is Beringer’s northernmost Chardonnay vineyard and has been the primary source for Private Reserve for decades. Located near the town of Yountville, in the Oakville AVA, daytime temperatures here slowly climb as the cooling morning fog recedes south to San Pablo Bay. This significant diurnal shift allows the grapes to maintain their acidity, which is essential to balancing the ripe, rich flavors as they develop during warm afternoons. Older vines, planted in 1976, featuring the Wente Clone 4, are predominant. For 2022, close to 25% of the blend was crafted from Big Ranch vineyard in Oak Knoll, which imparts a cooling influence being more centrally located within Napa Valley. Here the fruit retains more acidity and minerality, an influence from being closer to the San Pablo Bay. A higher selection of Burgundy clones also provides an elegant complexity and weight.
Ratings & Reviews
“Golden apple, yellow plums, and a touch of banana peel followed by chamomile tea leaves, hawthorn, browned toast and seductive sweet baking spices. Medium- to full-bodied and creamy textured with soft acidity that beautifully balances out the wine. Very precisely framed with underlying herb and mineral layers. Aged for 11 months in 60% new French oak. Predominantly from the vineyards in Oakville. Drink or hold.”
94 Points - Vinous:
The 2022 Chardonnay Private Reserve is creamy and expressive in the glass. Lemon confit, marzipan, pastry, tangerine peel and a kiss of French oak all come together. This expansive, layered Chardonnay has a lot to offer.
Where the Luminus cuvée is the estate's take on a fresher, more mineral-laced Chardonnay, the Private Reserve is always a richer, slightly more well-oaked cuvée, even if the current style here backed off dramatically from the richer, oak style of a decade ago. Revealing a lighter gold hue, the 2022 Chardonnay Private Reserve offers up a terrific nose of spiced apples, honeyed orange, toasted spice, and a hint of brioche. I love its overall balance on the palate, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, bright, integrated acidity, and a great finish. I love it today, yet this has plenty of room for growth and will keep for another 7-8 years, if not over a decade.
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:In a first, this vintage incorporates 15% Oak Knoll sourced fruit in addition to its traditional Oakville fruit. The 2022 Chardonnay Private Reserve is slightly honeyed on the nose, featuring ripe stone fruit and more modest notes of citrus. As expected, it's full-bodied and opulent but perhaps less over the top than previous years—for better or for worse, depending on your personal preferences. It's a livelier, more food-friendly wine than in the past, with a fine, silky texture and a great sense of elegance and restraint.
