About the Winery:
Barnett Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery, celebrating over 40 years on Spring Mountain, Napa Valley. With a focus on small lot, premium wines, Barnett produces an average of 8,000 cases annually. At an elevation of 2,000 ft, with rocky and well drained soils, our estate yields ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Sourcing from esteemed single vineyards across Northern California, we also produce beautiful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With a focus on organic farming, and minimalist winemaking techniques, each wine captures a sense of vintage and terroir.

About the Wine:
The color of the 2021 Rattlesnake is near opaque purple. The nose is very intense, with blackberry pie, caramel, dark roast coffee, cola, and raspberry reduction pouring out of the glass. Under these intense aromatics hides some volcanic minerality and crushed violets. The wine is ultra rich, plush and powerful on the palate. Darker fruit comes out, mostly reduced cassis matched by intense dark chocolate. The tannins are big, chalky, and matched by the famous Spring Mountain acidity. Dark chocolate covered cherries linger on the finish. This is an intense powerful wine that is barely starting to show the myriad of flavors it has to offer 19-20 years.

Alcohol: 14.9%

Ratings & Reviews

96+ Points - The Wine Independent:
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Rattlesnake Cabernet Sauvignon erupts from the glass with powerful notes of creme de cassis, blackberry preserves, and plum pudding giving way to wafts of lavender oil, crushed rocks, Chinese five spice, and tar. The full-bodied palate is jam packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spice flavors, framed by velvety tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and opulent." - LPB (Nov 2023)

96 Points - Wine Advocate:
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Estate Bottled is a special effort, loaded with hedonistic black cherries and black raspberries, plus captivating hints of sage and mint. By far the most concentrated of the Barnett 2021s, it's full-bodied and rich yet somehow manages to be supple and elegant at the same time, with a long, refreshing finish. More approachable than might be expected for such a dark mountain wine, it shows no shortage of ripe tannins, suggesting at least two decades of potential longevity." - Joe Czerwinski (Jan 2024)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake, Barnett's top wine, captures the essence of the house style. Inky dark fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice, chocolate, menthol and plum all build in the glass. This sumptuous, racy Cabernet Sauvignon has plenty to offer." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2023)

92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Bright and crunchy cherry fruit, plums, and wild herbs meld together with cocoa powder notes. Medium-bodied, showing fine-grained tannins and sweet cassis fruit, Damson plum, sage, thyme and rosemary with crisp tannins and a sweet cedar finish. Winemaker David Tate cold-soaks his grapes for 2-3 days, then ferments them in small bins and tanks and performs punch-downs and pump-overs 2 to 3 times a day over 18 to 22 days of maceration. The young wine is then pressed off into 93% new French oak barrels for ageing. Racked three times during its near-two-year maturation time." - Jonathan Cristaldi (May 2024)
