About the winery:
Castello Banfi is a family-owned vineyard estate and winery in the Brunello region of Tuscany. It was founded in 1978 thanks to the will of the Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani. From the beginning, the goal of the two brothers was to create a state-of-the-art winery combined with the most advanced science in the vineyards for the production of premium wines. Together with the Mariani family, Ezio Rivella, one of Italy's foremost enologists, who understood that due to the richness of the soils and the privileged microclimatic position, the property would have great capacity of development.

Notes from the Winemaker:
Ruby red color. The bouquet is complex, with notes of licorice, plum jam and light hints of vanilla in the finish. The structure is large, soft and powerful. The aftertaste is very long.

A super-classic of Montalcino and Banfi. A wine able to match the elegance and solidity of its elder counterpart with a freshness and directness that make it one of the most versitile wines within Banfi’s portfolio. Very enjoyable when released, it is also suitable for a long aging.

METHOD OF PRODUCTION
In temperature-controlled hybrid tanks of stainless steel and oak from 20 to 30 degrees centigrade, from 7 to 10 days. Malolactic: in barrel. Aged 1 year. 50% in customized 350 liter French Oak barrels, 50% in French Oak casks.

SEASONAL OUTCOME
The growing cycle began with a significant delay, with some rains during the spring. June was marked by cooler temperatures, under the seasonal average. August and September were hot and dry, but the ripening, despite two weeks delay, have been supported by water reserves of the previous months. Summer nights were characterized by cooler temperatures, contributing to the improvement of the quality of the grapes. From the end of September, rainfall was abundant, causing problems during the repining, without affecting the vineyards.

Ratings & Reviews

90 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"This is all smooth edges, with cherry flavors and a note of licorice. The tannins are refined and the finish conjures up hints of leather and tobacco. Drink now through 2022. 62,500 cases made." –BS (Oct 2018)

90 Points - James Suckling:
"Lots of elderberry compote and redcurrant reduction, as well as freshly squeezed lemons. Medium body, medium tannins and a very fruity finish. Drink now." (Sep 2018)
