About this Wine:
Altesino’s modern history begins with Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who purchased the estate in 2001 and at the same time purchased the Caparzo estate in the north of Montalcino. Altesino became the first Montalcino estate to introduce the concept of cru wines, made with a special selection of grapes from a single vineyard, in this case Motosoli, one of their seven vineyard sites, with its first vintage in 1975. The winery has two full-time winemakers, Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci, both firmly committed to maintaining Altesino’s hard-earned reputation as a Montalcino institution and a global leader in innovative winemaking.

Notes from the Winemaker:
This special, limited edition wine is made only in spectacular vintages and in small quantities from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes hand harvested from the Altesino, Macina, Pianezzine and Castelnuovo dell'Abate vineyards. This riserva is produced only in the best years in very limited quantities.

Tasting Notes:
Brunello Riserva offers a solid, full body and excellent aging potential. Its ample and complex bouquet is reminiscent of violets, wild berries, cedar, leather, tobacco and spices. On the palate, it is austere and seductive with a perfect blend of fruit, acidity and mouth coating tannins. This is the perfect bottle for Brunello lovers.

Food Pairing:
Pair with Steak au poivre, rack of lamb or beef carpaccio.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Laced with ripe cherry, strawberry, floral, spice, iron and leather flavors, this red is complex and charming, yet with serious tannins that ply the structure and lift the long finish. The fine balance should facilitate longevity. Best from 2024 through 2048. 1,600 cases made.” – BS (June 2021)

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Red-berry, wild-mint, graphite and rose aromas lead the nose on this fragrant, stunning red. Elegantly structured, the linear palate delivers juicy red cherry, cranberry, licorice and a hint of tobacco while polished tannins and fresh acidity provide balance. Drink 2022–2028.” – Kerin O’Keefe (5/1/2021)

95 Points - Vinous Media:
"With its mesmerizing and utterly classic bouquet, the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva lifts from the glass, mixing crushed black cherry, plum and leathery aromas with notes of sage, lavender and violets. The textures are silky-smooth, enveloping the palate in vibrant red and hints of blue fruit, as salty minerals, spice and rosy florals build toward the close. Its tannins are firm, yet there’s plenty of primary intensity to balance, along with cooling herbal tones that add refreshing lift. One of the more successful Riservas of the vintage, the 2015 is produced from a selection made throughout Altesino’s vineyards. It's matured in a mix of 3,000 to 10,000-liter Slavonian oak barrels for two years prior to bottling.” – Eric Guido (Nov 2020)

95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

"The Altesino 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (with 10,000 bottles made) shows a tight and firm delivery with the abundant fruit and the generous richness that is associated with this warm and sunny vintage. The wine is fermented in steel vats and ages in Slavonian oak casks for three years. The tannins are nicely integrated, however the wine’s solid structure will carry it forward over the years." – Monica Larner (November 2020)

94 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"Warm with baking spice, the 2015 Brunello Riserva has comforting aromas of cherry pie and purple plum. Full of ripe fruit, the palate gives way to more vinous, savory characteristics of cherry pit, black licorice, and tea leaf. The 2015 was aged for four years in new and used Slavonian oak. This is a contemplative wine in the Altesino lineup which deserves time to show what its potential will hold. Cellar 3-5 years and enjoy 2025-2035.” – Audrey Frick (3/4/2021)

94 Points - James Suckling:
"A very pretty Brunello now with sweet berry, orange-peel and cedar aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied, yet refined and relatively soft with silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Fine tannins." – James Suckling (November 2020)

94 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"While Altesino’s Montosoli bottling is a closeup of a single cru, this Riserva is a panoramic shot of Montalcino. It draws on a selection of bunches from the estate’s vineyards spread throughout the region. It's an attractive and seductive interpretation of 2015 with scents of rose, orange and exotic spice. The palate offers ample depth of macerated cherry and ripe strawberry. Tannins are supple, though build with a chalky texture and carry the weight of plentiful fruit effortlessly. A tangle of tarragon, fennel and mint linger on the finish." - Michaela Morris (Mar 2021)
