All our wines go through a malolactic fermentation. After tasting, blending and bottling, the secondary fermentation (prise de mousse) and maturing take place in the cool atmosphere of our cellars located 33 metres below street level. Each bottle is given a traditional remuage (hand riddling) before disgorging and dosage, and the wines rest for a minimum of three months before being released.

Ratings & Reviews

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Cooked apples and lemons with nougat, light caramel and ginger on the nose. It pours a bright straw color and offers up aromas of citrus zest, bread dough, and fresh flowers. Medium-bodied, it has a beautiful chalky texture, with a light salty flourish and a more citrus-toned palate, although it’s lovely and approachable, with a refined and focused mousse. Disgorged Fall 2022.<!--more-->Pol Roger is a sixth-generation family-owned business founded in 1849 that is solely focused on Champagne based in Epernay. Damien Cambres replaced former chef de cave Dominique Petit in 2018. Since 2011, they have fully moved to stainless steel fermentation and aging. They house 9.5 kilometers of cellars that are notably deep at 33 meters underground and employ four full-time riddlers to turn the bottles and carefully collect sediment from them. (Only 11 exist in the region today.) This year they completed a new facility for packaging and shipping that rests on the footprint of the historical site of the original cellars, which disastrously collapsed in 1900, destroying 1.5 million bottles. In August of 2022, Christian de Billy passed away at the age of 93. He was the great grandson of Pol Roger and was instrumental in the creation and launch of several cuvées, including the Rosé in 1961, the Blanc de Blancs vintage cuvée in 1965, and the cuvée Sir Winston Churchill in 1984 with the 1975 vintage. They own 92 hectares today and produce approximately 1.7 million bottles annually. Pol Roger is a Pinot Noir-based house that focuses on the art of blending. Given the vintage, it’s showing a more approachable side already, although it should have significant longevity ahead of it. In its youth, it’s more approachable than the 2013, and I would perhaps drink some of these now and then wait to be surprised as it holds on and likely has a wide drinking window. This wine hails from iconic terroirs: Ambonnay and Hautvillers, where the Pinot Noir grape flourishes, and Vertus, one of the rare Côte des Blancs villages still cultivating this varietal. In the early 20th century, this terroir was renowned for the quality of its still red wines, especially those produced from Pinot Noir. The red wine is selected at the blending stage, and its proportion adjusted to achieve the perfect harmony of aroma and structure. The primary goal is to bring out the purity of the fruit (red fruits) in an expressive, structured and elegant rosé, true to the Pol Roger style.

Vinification & Maturation

Once harvested, the grapes are quickly and gently pressed. The must undergoes two settling processes, one in the press house immediately after pressing and a second, a 24-hour cold settling in our vat room. A low-temperature alcoholic fermentation then takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, keeping each variety and cru separate until the final blending. As with all our wines, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. After tasting, blending and bottling, the second fermentation and ageing take place in the coolness of our cellars, 33 metres below ground. Here, each bottle undergoes the traditional riddling-by-hand process before its disgorgement and dosage. The wines then rest for at least six months before being shipped.

Tasting notes:

The wine boasts a lovely, luminous, bright appearance, unchanged since blending, and set off by fine bubbles. It reveals a delicate salmon pink hue with attractive pink and golden highlights. The nose is generous, immediately plunging us into a world of ripe red fruits (wild strawberries, black cherries) wrapped in aromas of rose petals. Delectable notes of strawberry tart and fruit drops emerge, underscored by exotic nuances of pineapple and lychee, as the wine breathes and gradually opens up. Fresh and expressive, it shows both richness and beautiful complexity. The palate reveals a silky, full-bodied texture. In harmony with the nose, it offers a spectrum of fruity flavours (strawberry, sour cherry, rhubarb and gooseberry) lifted by a delicate note of bitter almond. Its structure, defined by a lovely acidity, precision and tension, imparts both energy and finesse. The tannins are smooth, the balance is assured, and the tension is invigorating. Rich yet refined, this cuvée is full of personality. A long, elegant finish leaves an impression of freshness and finesse, heralding a very bright future for this champagne.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2019 Champagne Vintage Rosé is a more exceptional wine in the range and is structured, compact, and defined, with ripe raspberries. It pours a rich pink but not overly dark color and includes 18% red wine from Hautvillers, Vertus, and Ambonnay. This wine is compact and powerful, with very nice energy, real structure, saltiness, and rhubarb, along with a refined, pinpoint, lively, zesty mousse. There is fantastic purity here, with clarity and ripeness supported by refreshing acidity, and it can age for two decades or more without issue.

94 Points - Vinous:

The 2019 Brut Rosé is a pretty rich, heady wine from Pol Roger, largely because of the inclusion of 18% still red wine in the blend.
