Fruit is sourced from two viticultural areas within the county: the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco. The result is a wine with great representation of Monterey climate and geology. Climate for the county is predominately influenced by the famous Monterey Bay. The Monterey Bay is a large funnel, sending prevailing ocean breezes into the regions. This brings cool fog and air throughout the growing season. The Santa Lucia Highlands get the brunt of this wind, and also provide beautiful east-sloping hillsides for the vines. The soils of the Santa Lucia Highlands are decomposed granite—a rare find in coastal California that was brought here when part of the Sierra Nevada mountain range was sheared off and then sent northward by the San Andreas Fault activity. Arroyo Seco sits almost dead center between the parallel Santa Lucia and Gabilan mountain ranges that funnel wind through the Salinas Valley, thus bringing intense winds and fog. The geology represents an ancient riverbed with layers of deposited boulders and gravelly loam soil, which Pico Blanco conveys.

WINEMAKING: Pico Blanco represents an early time of Monterey County grapegrowing when the region was originally recognized as a place for cool-climate grape varieties. With the historical significance and traditional style of winemaking that the Pisoni Family prefers, purity and complexity continues to be the focus. Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc are hand-sorted and carefully pressed to moderate the extraction and phenolics derived from the grape skins. 100% neutral barrels are used for fermentation to obtain purity of fruit and gain texture. Fermentation is carried out only by native yeast to uphold our philosophy of winemaking and also strive for the most complex flavors and fermentation. This wine was bottled without any fining.

TASTING NOTES: Pale straw in the glass, the 2025 Lucy Pico Blanco is a vibrant and elegant blend of Pinot Gris (70%) and Pinot Blanc (30%). On first swirl, notes of white peach, Meyer lemon, and honeysuckle burst to life with remarkable intensity. Subsequent layers of wet stone and white flowers mingle with a chalky minerality that nods to the wine’s varied origins in the Santa Lucia Highlands (granite) and Chalone (limestone). The wine zips across the palate with flavors of lychee, lemon blossom, and near-ripe pear, all carried by crisp, bright acidity. The cooler 2025 vintage allowed for exceptional phenolic development at lower sugars, creating a wine that is light on its feet yet deeply textured. Bright and refreshing, this wine pairs beautifully with many seafood dishes inspired by the coastal Monterey region.

Cases Produced 1140

Alcohol 13.5%

Blend 70% Pinot Gris and 30% Pinot Blanc

pH 3.35

Fining None

Cooperage 100% Neutral Barrels

Fermentation 100% Native Yeast

Filtration Yes, prior to bottling

Ratings & Reviews

90 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"It’s based on Pinot Gris; there’s a history of Pinot Gris in Monterey County. The winter months were dry overall, receiving only about seven inches of rainfall, and forcing vines to reach deep into the rocky soils beneath them. Seemingly a reminder to be careful what you wish for, the rain was welcomed but not easy to predict. Four of the seven inches came at the end of January, keeping the team on their toes to manage erosion and flooding in the mountain vineyards. Buds broke a week or so later than normal, near the end of March, likely due to the preceding cold winter temperatures. Spring fever and slow growth forced the team to exercise patience and diligence amongst the vines. The Summer followed with mild temperatures, and the vines continued to grow with shorter canopies due to low winter rainfall. It was decided early on to remove extra shoots to create a smaller vine to ensure fruit would fully ripen. Smaller canopies and cooperative weather in the Fall allowed for a gentle harvest, with little stress to rush until the last week of September when temperatures began to rise. Overall, yields were above average with cluster weights staying consistent throughout harvest. Winter began in the Santa Lucia Highlands with significant rainfall—at eighteen inches, it was the highest seen in recent history. Following this cold and wet winter, vines shot out with vigor and strength as spring arrived. Due to the abundant rainfall, soils were teaming with activity and we quickly recognized that the season would require more work than usual in the vineyard. The farming team began shoot thinning and dropping fruit earlier and more aggressively than usual to bring the vines into balance and reduce yields to ensure physiological development. Summer and fall followed with mild weather in the Santa Lucia Highlands. This made for very slow sugar accumulation and the added hang time contributed to intense phenolic and flavor development. With this mild weather, harvest was almost a full month later than the preceding vintage—the latest seen since 1999. Low yields were essential to receive full ripeness. The final month of the growing season required additional passes to remove leaves and green clusters. Being such a late vintage, we welcomed the additional sunlight to help ripen fruit. The long, cool season ensures a bright acidity, which when combined with the rugged soils and estate-farming practices, creates rich tannins. With air, the tight grip of infancy loosens to reveal lifted notes of red cherry and crushed red berries that entice the senses. On the palate, bright acidity brought on by the chilled coastal air cuts a path followed by juicy flavors of black cherry, ripe raspberry and accented with more savory notes of baking spice, dried tea leaves, and hint of umami. An expansive Pinot Noir that is approachable in its youth with fine grained, almost silky tannin, this has a pillar of acidity that suggests long term aging will reward the most patient of palates.

Ratings & Reviews

96 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Deep and intense aromas of blackberry, purple flowers and ink-black hibiscus make for a fascinating nose on this bottling.
