On one of California's earliest wine estates, a unique terroir and ideal microclimate support a classical standard of viticulture, land use, and winemaking that is as relevant today as it was over a century ago.
An intimate valley within the greater Napa Valley, Stags' Leap is a place of natural beauty, storied buildings and gardens, a lively history, and a reputation for elegant wines showing finesse and intensity.
About the Wine:
Petite Sirah is a varietal that is enhanced by the deliberate diversity of our vineyard sites. Grapes from the vineyards located on our estate's deep, rocky soils make up the backbone of this Napa Valley Petite Sirah. Carefully selected fruit from both northern vineyards in Calistoga and St. Helena and southern vineyards in Oakville, Oak Knoll and Coombsville are added to intensify and broaden the wine's profile to include floral, spice and fruit characteristics.
The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with lower alcohol, concentrated flavors, color and excellent acidity.
Ratings & Reviews
97 Points - James Suckling:
"A solid red with deep berry, dark-chocolate and hazelnut character. Some clove and mahogany, too. It’s full-bodied, dense and chewy with very polished, layered tannins. I like the energy and focus to this petite sirah. One of the best I have ever had. Real old-vine character. Drink or hold." (Jun 2021)
93 Points - Natalie MacLean:
"Stags' Leap Winery 2018 Petite Sirah is a smoky and spicy Napa Valley red wine with a splash of Syrah and Grenache added to the mix. Dark purple in the glass, this full-bodied red is dry and intense with blackberry, blueberry, meaty, cocoa, dried wild herbs and spicy flavours on the palate. Drink or hold. Pour with a game tourtiere." (Oct 2021)
